Food provides us with energy, nutrients, water, and more! Just like how it matters what type of gasoline you put in your car, what you put in your body greatly impacts how you feel, how you function, and how your body works. If you put normal gasoline in a diesel truck, your engine probably won’t be happy with you. Same thing if you put lots of processed foods, sugar, and trans fat into your engine; your body probably won’t be happy with you either. Eating the wrong foods, having the wrong proportions, or even lack of eating can contribute to how you feel.
Whether you suffer from brain fog, problems focusing, bloating and gas, headaches, or even joint pain, all of this might come back to your diet. There are certain foods that are pro-inflammatory, meaning that when eaten, they tend to increase the amount of inflammation within your body. These food groups include refined sugars, refined grains, grain flour products, trans fats, and refined omega-6 oils such as corn, sunflower, peanut, etc.. The effects of inflammation can include depression, fatigue, lethargy, irritability, musculoskeletal pain, social withdrawal, and even lack of communication.
The good news is there’s also food groups that tend to be anti-inflammatory and decrease the number of inflammatory factors in your body. These consist of meats, wild-caught fish and seafood, omega-3 eggs, cheese, vegetables, fruit, nuts, spices, olive oil, coconut oil, butter, and coffee/tea. These food groups are so important because chronic inflammation is a risk factor for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimers. Therefore, eating more anti-inflammatory foods can lower your risk of these conditions and increase the longevity of your life.
Next time you go to the grocery store or decide to eat at your favorite fast food restaurants, remember that the energy you put into your body will affect the energy you get out, so choose wisely! It’s incredible how a change in someone’s diet can greatly change their life!
