A new research article showed that adequate Vitamin D levels support muscle function both during exercise and in the recovery process.
Vitamin D is a powerful nutrient because it helps with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, it can help regulate bone metabolism and electrolyte absorption. Making it the perfect nutrient for muscle recovery.
When we perform a strenuous exercise, tiny muscle fibers have been torn to build up stronger muscles. This process results in an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are free radicals in our body. When ROS levels are high, our bodies enter oxidative stress mode and results in damage to cellular structures.
The authors concluded that Vitamin D supplementation for more than 1 week with a minimum dose of 2000 IU/day appears to be an effective strategy to reduce muscle damage and inflammation after exercise due to its antioxidant properties.
Next time you have a strenuous or long workout, increase your dosage of Vitamin D to help with the recovery process!
