Belly Breathing to Protect Against Low Back Pain

Writer: Dr. Logan BatesDr. Logan Bates

Low back pain is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. While there are many different causes of back pain, one of the most common is muscle weakness and tightness in the core muscles. This can lead to instability in the spine, which can put extra stress on the lower back.

One simple but effective way to help protect your lower back from pain is to practice belly breathing. This type of breathing helps to strengthen the core muscles and improve spinal stability. It can also help to reduce stress, which can also contribute to back pain.

How to Practice Belly Breathing

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.

  • Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

  • Take a deep breath in through your nose, allowing your belly to rise as you inhale.

  • Exhale slowly through your mouth, drawing your belly button in towards your spine.

  • Repeat for 5-10 minutes, or as often as you like.

If you are experiencing low back pain, it is important to see a chiropractor to rule out any underlying conditions. A chiropractor can also provide you with additional tips on how to protect your lower back and relieve pain.
